Respect in the Workplace: Building a Professional & Respectful Culture

A respectful work environment contributes to team success and a stronger workplace reputation. Learning to accept differences in values and perspectives allows teams to grow through shared knowledge, while respectful behavior helps create a healthy and safe workplace. Respect in the Workplace helps participants understand respect, self-respect, owed versus earned respect, and how respect can be measured. Participants will explore the characteristics of respectful employees, mutual respect, earning respect, professionalism, and the difference between being liked and being respected. The course also examines disrespectful behaviors, including discrimination, bullying, and harassment, as well as behaviors that do not constitute harassment. Participants will explore how emotions influence workplace interactions and how choosing appropriate reactions can lead to more positive outcomes. Respectful communication is addressed through self-awareness, active listening, nonverbal and verbal communication, and constructive disagreement. Participants will also explore an inclusive mindset, including inclusive leadership, diversity versus inclusion, workplace diversity, the power of words, and creating an inclusive workplace. The course concludes with employee recognition, the R's of Respect—Recognition, Responding, Reporting, Roles and Responsibilities, and Rising Above—and practical ways to build a respectful workplace through personal responsibility, boundaries, ethics, and workplace policies.
