Unconscious Bias – Building Inclusive, Equitable Workplaces

Everyone has unconscious biases, and these biases can influence day-to-day decisions at work and at home. Unconscious Bias helps participants understand different forms of bias and recognize how they can affect workplace culture and business practices. The course begins by defining unconscious bias, exploring how it works, identifying triggers, and understanding its impact. Participants then examine a range of biases, including affinity bias, the halo effect, attribution bias, confirmation bias, the horns effect, contrast effect, beauty bias, height bias, conformity bias, gender bias, name bias, and ageism bias. The course examines how unconscious bias can affect recruitment, opinions, employee turnover, morale, and organizational reputation. Participants will explore practical ways to mitigate bias by setting expectations, gathering feedback, encouraging participation, and training employees. Training considerations include what to include, who should be trained, how training should be conducted, and how to check for understanding. The course also focuses on promoting inclusion through education, celebrating differences, listening to employees, and strengthening anti-discrimination policies. Finally, participants will explore the workplace, ethical, financial, and legal benefits of addressing unconscious bias, along with practical approaches to handling complaints, including gathering information, evaluating credibility, interviewing those involved, and taking appropriate action.
