Supervising Others: Essential Skills for Effective Frontline Leaders

Effective supervision requires more than simply assigning tasks. Supervisors need to communicate expectations clearly, help employees develop, delegate appropriately, provide useful feedback, manage their own time, and address conflict fairly. Supervising Others begins with setting clear expectations by defining requirements, identifying opportunities for improvement and growth, and communicating expectations verbally and in writing. Participants then explore cascading goals, SMART goals, and ways to help others establish meaningful goals. The course covers different approaches to assigning work and introduces three degrees of delegation: complete supervision, partial supervision, and complete independence. Participants will learn how to decide what to delegate, choose the right person, provide instructions, monitor results, and troubleshoot delegation challenges. Feedback and time management are also key components. Participants will explore characteristics of good feedback, informal and formal feedback, the 80/20 Rule, the Urgent-Important Matrix, productivity journals, and routines that simplify the workday. The course also addresses conflict resolution, fairness, seeking help, and special situations such as being promoted from within the team, leading a brand-new team, or taking over an established team. Finally, new supervisors will explore practical guidance on asking the right questions, going to Gemba, and continuing to learn.
